Family & Friend Fridays

One of the things I love about being home and Fridays is that we often get to take advantage of this time to see family and friends. Yesterday we got together with Grandpa Bob. We went to the nature center and on a little hike! A great way to welcome the first day of spring. We also enjoyed the calm, sunny 55 degree weather.

Last Friday, we got together with our friends Jen and Cora at the Shoreview play area. It seems on these playdates with Jen I'm so busy chatting that I forget to take photos of the kids! I'll have to work on that!

See if you can spy Ryder and Logan above ;) our kids were the only three here most of the time!!

Tough Guy *Updated*

Logan...this morning you got your first cast...I actually kind of expected this day to come for you, but maybe not as early as two!

How it happened: It was our first 70 degree day of the year. You wanted to be outside all day. You climbed into the big wooden chairs on the deck by yourself, you started learning to ride your balance bike, and you learned to do a flip on the geodome climber. You have been climbing all of our counters for almost two years, climbing onto the washer and dryer, bombing down the driveway on anything with wheels.

But the cast? What gave you the cast? Playing tag with your mom! Right before bed, we were savoring the last few minutes of outside time, playing tag in the backyard...on the grass. You slipped and must have landed on your arm in just the right way.

You are usually such a tough guy, but this time you cried for longer than usual and wouldn't move your arm. I thought it was dislocated. After a while of not moving it and crying pretty hard when we touched or moved your arm, we knew you had to go in.

We made it to Urgent Care 5 minutes before they closed and they were actually able to see us pretty quickly. You were not afraid. I told you they weren't going to hurt your arm; that they were just going to take pictures. And that's what they did. You took your blankey into the room during the xrays; I waited outside. You hesitated for a moment, but then went perfectly with the nurse. She said she thinks you were her best tiny patient. You listened to her directions and stayed very still. Again, you were not afraid. You were most interested in getting back out to the lobby to see if the 'race cars' (F1 racing) were still on ;)

Turns out you have a fracture at the top of the radial bone in your arm. So right about at your elbow. It needed a splint or cast for 2 weeks. Urgent Care didn't do casting, so we saw an orthopedic doc the next morning to confirm the fracture and do the casting.

Again, you were so patient during this process. If only you'd sit that still at home sometimes!! ;) She called in an art project for your arm. You thought it was cool - you were trying not to smile :) Especially because you got to pick your color: purple is apparently your favorite color right now.

The cast is not slowing you down one bit! You have figured out how to climb on our barstools, get yourself dressed and carry toys in your shirt since you're out a hand for the time being. You don't cry when you can't do something; instead, you become determined. Determined to climb and be active even though your arm isn't as easy to move as it usually is.

Your dad and I were commenting tonight on how the cast looks so normal on you - ha! I think with all the crazy things we've seen you do over the past couple years, it just fits your adventurous, dare-devil personality! We know you are getting the good care you need and will heal up just fine, so we haven't been too worried about this whole thing. And your great attitude has made it easy for us.

I'm excited to see how happy you will be when you can use both arms again. You have asked me, "I have the cast for a short time or a long time?" And while eating ice cream, you dripped a little on your arm, so you said 'Sorry, cast.' You are just so cute.

Happy healing, little buddy.

Bedtime

Even though he's being a stinker by not going to sleep, it's pretty cute to watch Logan singing 'moves like Jager' to George...

Naptime

We're still needing to put in a fair effort to preserve naptime. I'm hoping once it warms up and we can play outside more, it will get easier.

As long as I'm hearing noise up in his room, I know he's okay and can generally figure out what trouble he's getting into. Today, after a period of silence (after plenty of mischief), I thought I should check on him. I was a little nervous when I couldn't get in...

But all is good...he just passed out by the door :)

Playroom Campout

With everyone catching a tummy bug, we've been staying in to avoid spreading germs. Since we are on day 8, I figured we needed something a little extra special to keep the kids entertained in the house. So we decided on a playroom campout!

Compete with an outdoor hike, trees on the chalkboard, s'mores, and stars shining on the ceiling, it was a success :)

It took a little convincing to get Logan to fall asleep when it's so easy to walk out of the tent, but I'm glad he decided to cooperate so he could experience the fun, too.

Another Weekend at Home

This how most people cope with the flu and a 102 temp:

This is how Ryder handles the flu with a 102 temp:

A Day in the Life

I have been wanting to do this 'day in the life' again for a while (after this post), but I'm not very good about pulling out my 'good' camera to take the shots throughout the ordinary parts of the day. Since I've been home with the boys a lot this week (and well-equipped with my camera phone), I was able to pull one together.

Yesterday: It's not quite a typical day since Logan has been home sick (stomach flu for 6 days!), but it still shows how we spend an at-home day together.
From top left: 'Special Coffee' (hot cocoa); walking laps at the dome; art (painted noodle necklaces); early nap on the couch; quiet solo time for Ryder (rare, but we're working on this); a new recipe (sriracha kale chips - yum!!); more art (heart raccoons...the kids call them wolves); dusting (they asked to help clean!); pretend play with our newly made s'mores sticks :)
Again, top left: watching the snow fall out the window; Logan thinking he should play 'Ninja Warrior'. I stopped him to prevent shaking up the sensitive tummy; art (Lego dude paper chain!); Logan's Lego dudes; modeling the painted necklace; finished making my second scarf!; outside time; bubble bath; story time (they both wanted to read Frozen - and Ryder asked me if I was skipping words because it wasn't really making sense. As he would say, 'busted!' So his story ended up being nice and long :)

It's interesting to notice the similarities between this day and the one two years ago when Logan was a baby. On my days home with the kids, I still like to try a new recipe, try to create something during naptime, reheat my coffee throughout the day because I'm too busy playing with the kids to drink it while it's hot, still potty-training...one awesome difference is that I'm not studying!! At least not yet...

I hope to repeat this with my nice camera sometime soon...
