Utah | Day 6

Today was a travel day, but not without a few memories / photos to jot down.

Shenanigans in Park City...

Our picnic lunch at the Olympic Park - watching the groomer make moguls...

And my great little travelers on the way home. Brecken even greeted and gave his boarding pass to the gate agent :)

Free entertainment. Ryder was the same way at this age. They could watch the baggage 'trains' and planes forever.

"Bye, Utah!"

Another nap, making it an easy (nausea-free) flight :)

Utah | Day 5

To be honest, I wasn't sure how today would go. I have never seen Logan ski, but I only imagined a 5 year old would hold up the group on the mountain.

We had about a 50 minute drive over to Brighton from our Park City rental house. It was a nice 8am drive with the sun shining, plenty of coffee, clear roads, and beautiful scenery. We geared up and hit the chair lift. It had to be upper 30's as the day went on. A perfect day to spend outside.

Toward the end of our first run, Shawn and I looked at each other shocked at how well Logan did! He charged! He was doing parallel turns on his edges, keeping his speed, and staying in control when near other people.

Ski lessons for him at Park City were expensive at ($560ish for 2 days), but even though we're super frugal, we were thinking it was actually worth it. He was about as good as Ryder. Probably lays better turns than Ryder, but Ryder goes a teeny bit faster and is a little more reliable / not as likely to make a wrong turn on his way down. I only compare them because we think Ryder's a good skier already and this is his third trip out west (Montana, Squaw, and now Utah). But that's what they say about second kids, right? They have to keep up with their older siblings.

I loved how he crouched down into a tiny ball to keep his speed when trying to get to the chairlift at the end of the run or when he saw an uphill ahead. I also loved how he jumped into the edge of the woods anytime he saw a cool path he wanted to take (even though it freaked me out a little to have my baby skiing in the trees), and that he tried to get air on every little jump / bump on the run (again, even though it freaked me out). There was one jump (double jump?) he took that he essentially rag-dolled in the air and his skis came off. Although it looked painful, he was fine. He got right up, Shawn put his skis on, and continued down the run. Just like Ryder did the couple times he fell (usually only from getting a ski stuck in powder).

We enjoyed a solid day on the mountain, hitting almost all the runs that were open (and not marked with hazardous obstacles - it's been a low snow year). We took a little break for some snacks around lunch time and then continued until 3pm-ish. And of course, finished the day with a beer (and Sprite for the kids) at the bottom.

We all stayed together for the majority of the day, only splitting when Craig and Ryder had their 'incident'. I hope Ryder remembers this memory because he was so amped to share the story with us when we reconnected.

He was riding the chairlift with Grandpa Craig and accidentally dropped his ski pole off the lift. Then, while he was looking for the rest of the group at the top, he forgot to get off the chair and dropped 4 feet (according to him) when he finally realized he had to get off. Then they skied down to the pole and while Craig was trying to pick it up, he somehow fell and took Ryder out right under the chairlift where all the people could see, skis off and all. Oh man, I should just record him telling this story. He giggles so much. He said they were too embarrassed to look up at all the people witnessing their debacle :) Eventually, they got the ski pole, took some runs together, and then reconnected with us. Even though he's only 8 and barely remembers my phone number, I wasn't too worried when I didn't see him for a while. He is a pretty safe skier and already great with his mountain navigation. So, other than that, the speed of the two littles was fast enough for us to all stay together.

While cruising both powder runs and corduroy, I remember thinking I could do this every.single.day.

But I'll also remember the boys making each run their own, giggling together on the chairlift, and candidly showing us their impressive skills.

A sunny, warm, cruise-along day. A perfect end to our trip with family and friends.

Utah | Day 4

Our fourth day was an off day. We went to the Olympic Park museum, wandered around downtown Park City (and saw the Town Lift we rode yesterday), and had lunch at Wasatch Brewery. I didn't realize that you have to be careful with your beer order or you'll end up with 3.2 or 4% beer! All the beer on the mountain and in the village is 4% max.
Fun at Olympic Park...
"Logan Robert Billing Shredder" - as he nicknamed himself ;)

Utah | Day 3

Today was day two at Park City. Since we rode Canyons yesterday, we rode the Park City side today. It continued to snow overnight, so we had a mix of some clean groomers, lightly dusted runs, and plenty of powder stashes on the sides of every run. We had sun, we had clouds, and we had snow. Such a mix of conditions - everything you could want from a trip in one day :)

Logan had ski class again today from 9-3. Yesterday he graduated from level 3 to level 4 in the morning. Today he spent the day in level 4 with one other kid in his class. He was taking blue runs with his teacher, working on parallel turns and hockey stops. We ran into him on one of our runs and it was awesome to check in with his teacher and hear how much fun he was having. He skied away from us with a little swagger - thought he was pretty cool stuff :)
Ryder continued to do awesome as well. In the two days we have been out, we haven’t had to wait for him at all (except for the couple times we had to help him after falling in deep snow). And his attitude has been awesome.

After a solid day of runs, we stopped at the base for a brew by the bonfire in the sunshine. Always my favorite stop at the end of the day.

In the evening, we all got together for dinner at the house :)

Utah | Day 2

We woke up to a bunch of snow this morning. I checked Logan into ski school and we jumped on the orange bubble lift to enjoy a day of powder skiing at Canyons. I was so proud of how Ryder handled the snow and kept a positive attitude all day!! And he was fast - we didn’t have to wait for him at all. Well, except for the one time I had to dig him out! He got caught in some deep snow on the edge of a run and it buried his skis and we had to look pretty hard for his poles. Other than that, it was a smooth day.

Ski school

So much snow!!

Proud papa :)

We met up with Martina and Chris mid day and took some runs together before splitting to pick up our kids.

We had a post-ski brew at the base before grabbing Logan and heading home. And of course, enjoyed some time in the hot tub :)

Utah | Day 1

We had a great start to our Utah vacation with a smooth 8:45am flight out of MSP. I literally think this was the best flight we’ve had since starting to bring the kids on trips. Logan colored, Ryder played his iPad, and Brecken watched out the window as we took off and then closed his eyes for a solid 2 hour nap! That meant Shawn was able to watch a movie and I read a book (Kindle). Nice and relaxing!!
One chill dude during take off...

Calm, cozy, and QUIET...

Watched for a couple minutes before falling asleep :)

Arriving in Utah!!

We tested the kids with a wait for the rental car, a trip out to lunch, and then grocery shopping. So that got a little long. But then we checked into our rental house, had some time in the hot tub, it snowed a bunch, and Martina, Hannah, and Chris came over!! So awesome they were able to join us on this trip. It was so fun to have Martina and my kids play together :)
