Brecken | 9 Months

Brecken! You just turned 10 months, but I wanted to recap a little bit about your 9th month while it's still fresh in my memory :)

At 9 months, you became a mover! You army crawl like crazy. You use your arms and legs to crawl, but you've rarely lifted your belly off the floor. You are in search of any tiny piece of food or fuzz you can put in your mouth.

You don't really like to be contained. My go-to would be to put you in the Jonny Jumper or exersaucer while I shower or do laundry, but you're typically not a fan of that idea. You will do it from time to time (like when we're outside and sometimes while we're making dinner), but now that you know you can move, you prefer to be free to roam.

You love the grass. You have no issues sitting or laying in the grass. (Ryder used to lift all of his limbs at this age to avoid touching it) In fact, you even enjoy eating it (ick)...

You are a great sleeper. When we're on schedule, you go to bed around 7:30 and sleep until 7:15/7:30am (sometimes even 8:30) the next morning.

I finally became brave enough to give you diced (soft) foods this month! And you love them! You strongly prefer them over purees. You also started eating dairy (yogurt and cheese) this month. You're so-so with yogurt, but you love cheese.

You're still pretty quiet. The most common noise you make is a giggle. It's pretty awesome. You also discovered you can shriek this month - which I have to say I've had a little fun with. We can 'scream' back and fourth mimicking each other :)

Your favorite activity inside (other than eating) is being pushed around in the Cozy Coupe car. If you see it, you make excited noises that tell me you want to go in it soo bad! You love to turn the wheel and honk the horn.

You typically take 2 naps (9-10am and 1-3pm) each day. You are good at napping on the go.

You grab at everything. Including the frames during your monthly photoshoot and everything on the table whe we're out to dinner.

I love seeing your little personality develop. So far, you are 80% chill, 10% adventurous, and 10% hungry boy ;)

Love you, Brecky!

Daddy's Look-A-Like

Pretty much everyone we know has said Brecken looks exactly like Shawn. I found a couple photos of Shawn when he was little, so thought it would be fun to compare. What do you think?!

I sure wouldn't mind if he grew up looking like this cutie :)

Friday

With daycare being closed this week, we have had a ton of extra family time.

Most days, we have been doing the morning routine (which takes a while these days now that Brecken is on full meals and bottles and the big boys like different foods), then packing up the car for some fun. Loading up the car is becoming second nature, but involves a ton of stuff - diapers, bottles, water for the baby bottles, formula, water bottles for the big kids, spare clothes for Breck and a spare set that Ry or Logi could use, usually swim suites / towels / rash guards x3, lunchbox, babyfood, bib, sometimes the portable highchair, snacks x3 + snack for me, coffee & water for me, shoes! (Logan is constantly climbing into the car and buckling up without them), sunglasses, hats x4, sunscreen...you know - just the essentials ;) I think I also pack a bunch of stuff so we can still have a little spontaneity in our days (like staying an extra night somewhere or making an extra fun stop on the way home and still having enough formula / baby food).

I think it's funny because this spring when I was still nursing Breck 100% of the time, all I needed was myself and a spare diaper tossed in my purse and we were good to go for hours! But with summer, we tend to be gone longer and are out for activities that involve water.

I remember this phase when Logan was a baby, too. It pretty much took 2 hours from the time we decided to go anywhere until we had the baby fed, a fresh diaper, had the little one go potty, load the car, and get everyone buckled up. So we're in that stage again - at least for the summer. I feel like I should get an award just for getting everything together and getting everyone in the car! (And, I actually do reward myself often with coffeehouse coffee....)

But, once we are out, it is so worth the effort. The kids are so happy, they are burning energy, and we are playing together (as opposed to me trying to make time to play, but instead multi-tasking with household chores, responding to work emails, and house projects).

Yesterday, we went to grandma D's to take a few more senior pictures of Mikayla (and go for a quick swim):
Trouble 1 and Trouble 2...
Logan pouring water on Auntie KK...
Brecken giggling at his big brother's shenanigans...

And today, we met up with Grandpa Bob at Tamarack Nature Center:
The boys love building with the large branches...
Logan showcases his stellar balance skills...

We did the typical rock climbing and playing in the 'creek', but this time we also spent quite a bit of time in the garden. The veggies and herbs were all in full bloom, and we even got to taste some of them. Ryder was all about this part. He loved the chives, tarragon, and purple cabbage. He loved smelling the peppermint and sage plants, too. Pretty much anything interactive. Logan loved filling the watering can and watering all the veggies. Brecken just watched everything contently from the Bjorn :)

Love that we still have two more full months of summer. Good thing I'm getting the hang of walking out the door while tossing everything in a tote!

Summer Fun

What a fun long weekend we've had. It started with our first bike ride with Brecken! He wasn't crazy about the helmet and seemed to just tolerate the ride without a headrest, but hopefully he'll like it more when he's fed and has the right setup.
No more free rides ;)
We biked to Chipotle for dinner. Ryder did a great job with the 10 mile ride - especially since he rode 10 miles the day before. Logan has been loving rides in the WeeHoo :)

We also spent a lot of time with family by the water.
Ryder learned to swim in the deep end without a life jacket! It was hard to convince him to try it, but once he did, he was hooked! He did lots of flips and twists off the diving board, swimming to the side after each one :)

My favorite was when Shawn and Ryder played 'p-i-g'. (You have to repeat the other persons trick or you get a letter)

Mikayla and I did a few flips, too :)
Logan and Leyla played so nice together and both swam so well in the deep end with life jackets...

We sang happy birthday...

Brecky swam...

We did some 4-wheeling...
The kids pushed grandpa in the pool...

I rode with my littlest sister for the first time since she became a legal driver...in her new [to her] Xterra :)

Quinny and Brecken hung out in the gazebo...

Breck's drove a boat for the first time...

I pent lots of time snuggling with my boys...

The boys went tubing...and got dumped for the first time...

Shawn set a few turns...

We watched a boat parade....

And overall, spent a lot of time just relaxing with family.

Hope you had a happy 4th!!

Lutsen | Camping

Last weekend we went on our first camping trip with all three kids! Shawn did the Lutsen 39er mountainbike race and we decided to make a family weekend out of it.

We left Friday morning, stopping in Duluth for lunch at Canal Park Brewing and to let the kids throw rocks in the water. This is by far their favorite north shore activity :) We love the patio at CPB in particular because of the large boulders the kids climb on, allowing us to eat in peace :)

Stop at Palisade Head on our way north of Duluth

We made it to Lutsen with plenty of time for packet pick up at the mountain and to set up the campsite at Lamb's resort.
Podium shot at packet pick up :)

I loved that I got to pour myself a glass of wine while the boys all set up the tent :)

I haven't decided if I would do this again later this summer, because some parts were definitely tough with a baby, but in general, it was an awesome family weekend.

One of the tough parts was that it was only 55 degrees in the middle of the night, so Brecken didn't sleep great. And I didn't sleep great because I was worried about him being cold. I don't think he ever opened his eyes in the middle of the night, but he wanted to be snuggled. Even thought we put him in a baby hat, two onesies, fleece pj's and a sleep sack, it didn't seem to be enough to keep him warm. Between both nights, I ended up bouncing him for hours in the tent. Honestly, I kind of enjoyed the quiet snuggles (since I knew I could have good coffee in the morning!) and I think my legs got a better workout from the weekend than Shawn's did from his bike ride ;)
Keeping warm in the morning.

The other inconvenient part was heating bottles. We gave most of them cold, but he wasn't crazy about that. One night we went to bed early, and I crawled out of the tent while everyone was sleeping to fire up the Jet Boil and heat water for Breck's last bottle of the day. These things made camping more work - but our family is used to associating work with fun (like long, hard mountainbike rides just for fun or like biking 20 miles to dinner). So it was worth it.

The awesome things about having all three kids camping way offset the tough things. Brecken was super easy going during the days. He'd just sit and play in his pack.n.play while we hung out at the camp. He did great out to eat for lunch and dinner. He loved our walks in the stroller and Bjorn throughout the campground. He napped on the go and did great with less sleep than usual. I think my favorite part was how he would giggle and giggle when he'd see the boys throwing rocks into the water. The other awesome part was how much the boys loved the waves. Saturday was a little stormy, which meant the waves were huge! There were actually 3 or 4 sets of surf-able waves. I loved letting the boys run down by the waves and play 'ninja warrior' on the big boulders on the beach.

I also loved letting them watch Shawn's bike race. I always appreciate teaching them about combining fun and fitness. We were able to watch the start and the finish of the race and played at the campground playground for a bit inbetween. We were so proud of Shawn for finishing so much faster than he expected.

The big boys slept great in the tent. All the kids slept in past 7 each morning, too - which is huge progress from previous trips.

On the way home, we stopped in Duluth again. We had a picnic lunch in Lief Erickson Park, ice cream at Coney Island, hung out by the water in Canal Park, and had a beer at the new Endion Station (which has apparetnly been there for 3 years already. It's an off-chute of Fitgers Brewhouse).

Tons of fun. Can't wait to do it again next year.
